  • Hydroxyzine (trade names include Atarax, Iterax, Ataraxone, Bestalin, Hixizine, Hizin, Teva-Hydroxyzine, Ucerax, Vistaril) is an antihistamine and anti-anxiety medication from diphenylmethane derivatives pharmacological group. This medicine is used to treat anxiety, insomnia, tension, psychoneurosis, neurological disorders, interstitial cystitis; for sedation before and after general anesthesia; for therapy of itching and irritations due to certain allergies and allergic conditions, including hives, urticaria, atopic or contact dermatitis, histamine-mediated pruritus; as an antiemetic for the reduction of nausea and vomiting, including that due to motion sickness; with other medicines to induce sleep before surgery; as a weak analgesic to relieve pain; to relieve the effects of opioid withdrawal; experimentally for the treatment of COVID-19 to degree of direct antiviral effect; and for other medical purposes. It works as a selective histamine H1 receptor inverse agonist. This mechanism of action is responsible for its antihistamine and sedative effects.
